Effusivity Tests

Thermal effusivity measures how quickly a material can absorb and release heat when in contact with the skin.

Fabrics with higher thermal effusivity values feel cooler and transfer heat away more efficiently, contributing to a more comfortable and dry experience.

Testing Procedure

Heat is applied to the fabric, and the speed at which the material absorbs and conducts the heat is measured.

 

Results reflect the material’s ability to manage heat flow, an essential property for cooling textiles.

Highlights

In the textile industry, thermal effusivity values for cooling fabrics average around 200 Ws½/m²K, depending on the material composition and intended application. 

Fabrics with values closer to or exceeding 300 Ws½/m²K are considered high-performance and are typically used in specialized applications such as athletic wear, technical garments, or premium bedding.

QMAX Tests

QMAX tests measure transient heat transfer upon fabric-to-skin contact, and evaluates a fabrics ability to manage heat, which is crucial in high-temperature or body-heat exposure scenarios. 

Higher Q-MAX values signify superior cooling performance. 

Testing Procedure

  • A heated plate, warmer than the fabric, is pressed against the material to mimic skin contact.

  • The Q-MAX value, measured in watts per square centimeter (W/cm²), quantifies the fabric’s ability to transfer heat efficiently.

Testing Conditions

  • Temperature: 20 ± 2ºC

  • Relative Humidity: 65 ± 4% RH

  • Test Surfaces: Face Side and Back Side

  • ΔT (Temperature Difference): 20ºC

Performance Highlights

The industry standard for cooling fabrics typically falls in the range of 0.15 to 0.25 W/cm² in Q-MAX tests, depending on the type of material and its intended use.

Fabrics achieving values above 0.25 W/cm² are generally considered high-performance cooling materials.
